Firstly Codeine is an opioid analgesic used to treat moderate to severe pain when the use of an opioid is indicated.
Paracetamol and codeine are both present in Codeine 30mg/500mg caplets. Paracetamol is both an analgesic (pain reliever) and an antipyretic (cooling agent) (lowers raised temperatures). Codeine is present in this product. Codeine is a pain reliever that belongs to the opioid analgesic class of drugs. It can be taken alone or in conjunction with other pain relievers. Co-codamol caplets (30mg/500mg) are used to treat severe pain. Co-codamol 30mg/500mg caplets are for the short-term alleviation of moderate pain in children over the age of 12 that is not resolved by other medicines such as paracetamol or ibuprofen alone.
Codeine is indicated in patients older than 12 years of age for the treatment of acute moderate pain which is not considered to be relieved by other analgesics such as paracetamol or ibuprofen (alone).
The relief of pain (analgesia) is a primary goal for enhancing the quality of life of patients and for increasing the ability of patients to engage in day-to-day activities. Codeine, an opioid analgesic, was originally approved in the US in 1950 and is a drug used to decrease pain by increasing the threshold for pain without impairing consciousness or altering other sensory functions. Opiates such as codeine are derived from the poppy plant, Papaver somniferum (Papaveraceae).4
Codeine is utilized as a central analgesic, sedative, hypnotic, antinociceptive, and antiperistaltic agent, and is also recommended in certain diseases with incessant coughing
